ICQ (I Seek You) is an instant messaging computer program which lets registered users to communicate with registered friends and colleagues in real time. Developed by the Israeli company Mirabilis, ICQ offers a pioneering communication experience by enabling quick interaction amid users across all communication platforms. In 1998, AOL Time Warner acquired Mirabilis for $407 million.
A Universal Internet Number or a Unified Identification Number (UIN) is assigned to ICQ users during their registration process. Users can also log in using the particular email address which they associated with their UIN upon registration. A registered user can search for users by their email addresses and no external clients are required to add each other to their contact list. After setting up contact list, the user will be notified whenever any member from his/her contact list gets online.
